Dairy Cattle

With annual exports in excess of $11 billion, the dairy industry is New Zealand’s largest export earner. It is the mainstay of our economy and as you strive for more efficient production and improved profitability you need to be sure that the animal health advice you receive is helping you to reach your business goals.

A sick, poorly producing animal is a significant cost to your business so a large part of what we focus on is animal health planning to prevent illness and maximise animal performance. We aim to provide quality advice, services and products that specifically target the needs of your farming business. As animal health professionals we aim to provide you with a quality product based on years of experience and the best of current science.

The team at Tararua Veterinary Services offers a wide range of animal health services in areas such as:

Animal Health Planning

A large number of our clients have signed up for our animal health planning service and this is an area we will continue to focus on. Planning your animal health events in advance alongside your vet ensures that all areas of herd health are adequately covered and any questions you have are answered by a true animal health professional.

Milk Quality

Maintaining the quality of your milk is an essential part of your business. We offer advice and services in the areas of; mastitis diagnosis and treatment, the selection of antibiotics suitable for your farm, interpretation of milk quality and herd test data, the selection of appropriate dry cow treatments (dry cow therapy, teat-seal etc), and grade-busting. If you have mastitis or somatic cell count concerns please get in contact with us.

Nutritional Management

Both Steve Harvey and Mary Lund are qualified Intelact nutritional consultants. They and the rest of the veterinary team offer a wide range of services in the areas of; feed budgeting, feed evaluation, trace element and mineral monitoring, feed supplement options and transition feeding.

Reproductive Management

Our team has an excellent knowledge base to assist you with decisions relating to reproductive management. Our “Seasonal Reproductive Management” seminar series start after each pregnancy testing season have had excellent feedback. We also offer the following services; pregnancy testing (both ultrasound and manual palpation), metri-checking, non-cycling cow treatments, oestrus synchronisation, and bull breeding soundness examinations.

Lameness

We have a team skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of lame cows. We are committed to the training and up-skilling of you and your team in this area and run regular lameness workshops to achieve this. Danielle Gifford is registered as a Healthy Hoof trainer.

Replacement stock

The success of your farming business in the future depends on the quality of the stock you rear now. All aspects of rearing replacement stock from birth through to the adult cow influence the performance of your farm in the future. We can help you tackle issues such as; calf rearing and weaning, parasite control, trace element supplementation, nutrition, and setting and achieving growth targets.

Preventing other disease

We can help you develop animal health and vaccination plans to prevent clostridial disease, leptospirosis, rotavirus, salmonella and BVD on your farm depending on the risk these diseases pose to your operation. We also offer the most current and practical advice on BVD testing and control, facial eczema control and parasite management.

Animal treatment and emergencies

In addition to these services we respond to any sick or injured animals that require veterinary attention.
